Top Ten Reasons to Attend Pope John XXIII School

10.  READING: All of our 3rd graders (and even some of our kindergarteners) are skilled and motivated readers.  Our 7th grade TERRA NOVA average reading scores are consistently in the 90% range. We have a Balanced Reading Approach with phonics/word study and literature.

9. MATH: We use the 2001 McGraw Hill math program from PreK to 6th grade and the University of Chicago math program in 7th & 8th grade.  All of our 8th graders will graduate with Algebra or Honors Algebra I.

8.  SCIENCE: Science is a “hands-on” discovery-based SCITT science curriculum in lower grades and a new Scott Foresman series for K-4th grades. Integrated lab activities with the new Glencoe science program for 6th, 7th, & 8th gradescover Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Sciences.  Our Science Olympiad Team has won recognition in regional competition and in the state competition as well.

7.  PHONICS & SPELLING:  Instruction begins in preschool with identifying letters and matching them to the correct sounds, to write and read words.  In keeping with current brain research, the reading program is integrated with phonics and spelling instruction.

6.  SOCIAL STUDIES:  The MacMillan program was adopted for grades K-6 and the McDougal Little program was adopted for grades 7th and 8th.

5.  WRITING:  Journaling begins in kindergarten.  Writers' workshops continue to be held through the upper grades.  Research skills are developed as early as 2nd grade with a culminating research project in 8th grade.

4.  AND MUCH MORE…We love our in-school specials: gym, computer lab, art, music, library, drama, recorder ensemble, chess club, choral singing, band lessons, violin and cello lessons, French, Spanish, and Latin classes.

3.  AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES:  We love all of our extra-curricular activities: beginning band, advanced band, jazz band, football, flag football, basketball, volleyball, crosscountry, Oakton Language Club, Reading Club, and Great Books.

2.  CARING COMMUNITY:  Our students are kind, considerate, and friendly.  Our teachers are dedicated, highly educated, and caring.  Our parents are devoted, generous with their time, talents, and treasures.

1.  FAITH:  We begin each day with prayer.  Religion classes are held daily in preschool through the eighth grade.  We integrate faith with moral training throughout the day.  We are active Catholics who live their faith through service projects and regular liturgical celebrations.
